| Theme: Unlucky things | * Mirrors, the number 13 |
| Best known superstition: | Breaking a mirror gives 7 years of bad luck and the number 13 is bad luck as well. |
| Freaking out because you discover that you have
just broken a mirror (right)? You should be freaking out, because breaking
a mirror is a terrible thing to do. It will give you seven years of misfortune.
The reason behind this belief is probably the old idea that a person's
soul is in their reflection, so that if you smash your mirror, your soul
will be damaged too, dooming them to an early death, and not giving them
an entry to heaven. Are there any ways of making up for this bad luck then?
Yes - if you very carefully pick up all the broken pieces and throw them
into a river of stream, then the bad luck will be "washed away".
Of all numbers thirteen is the best known for its bad luck. Those who fear the numbers influence are suffering from "triskaidekaphobia". Some people claim that the number is bad luck because 13 people sat down for the Last Supper before Jesus was crucified, and with this in mind few hosts will serve dinner with thirteen at the table. In the Norse mythology twelve Gods gathered for a feast when a thirteenth, Loke entered. Loke then, after the meal, killed Balder who was the most beloved of the gods. Friday the thirteenth of any month is very ill-omened, and Friday the thirteenth of March is the worst of them all. The number seven also has some superstition connected
to it. It took God seven days to create the world, and any association
with the number is lucky. The seventh son of the seventh son is the most
lucky of men, and when people talk about the "seven year itch" they mean
that every seven years a person's personality undergoes a complete change.
