| Best known superstition: | Keep a hot cross bun in the house for a year, and it will protect the house against bad luck. |
| Good Friday - God's Friday is the day Jesus was
crucified, and numerous superstition are connected with this day, and with
the hot cross buns. On Good Friday at one time the Devonians (people from
Devon) broke pieces of pottery in the belief that the sharp edges could,
symbolically, cut the flesh of Judas, the betrayer. No clothes were to
be washed on this day, since it was believed the owner's life could be
washed away, and for obvious reasons blacksmiths never made or hammered
nails on Good Friday.
Hot cross buns were originally made from leftover dough from the sacramental loaves (the loaves with a cross on top), but nowadays they are made from a normal dough. They are always marked with a cross in honour of the Lord. Maybe you would like to try them yourself? It is considered lucky to eat at least one of these buns on Good Friday. They are also said to cure stomach pains, and if you hang one in the building, you will protect it from bad luck or fire. |
